Quick answer: for most small sellers, a roll of kraft packing paper covers general void fill, and a roll of small-bubble wrap handles fragile items. Together they protect most orders without much storage space.
Our top picks
Compared
| Void fill | Protection | Storage space | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraft paper | Good blocking and bracing | Low (roll) | Filling gaps, wrapping, recyclable packaging |
| Bubble wrap | Best cushioning | Medium | Glass, ceramics, electronics |
| Honeycomb paper | Good cushioning, plastic-free | Low | Fragile items with an eco angle |
| Packing peanuts | Fills odd shapes | High | Irregular items; messy for buyers |
| Air pillows | Light fill | Needs a machine or pre-filled bags | High volume operations |
The shake test
Pack the box, close it and shake it. If anything moves, add more fill. Items should not touch the box walls, and fragile items need about 2 inches of cushioning on every side.
Tips
- Do not overfill so the box bulges; carriers may measure it larger.
- For Amazon FBA, fragile units need protective prep before you ship. See FBA prep in 2026.
- Mount a paper roll on a holder at your packing station to speed up packing.
